A Wrench in the Plans

Last March, we were in the middle of a complete electronics install when the first Covid lockdown occurred. With no school, no babysitters and a boat on the hard, the iPad kept them company while mom and dad worked.

Since mid-March, Brian and I have been going full-tilt with an extensive list of to-dos every day. As soon as we drop the kids off at school, we have six hours to tackle as many boat and house-related tasks as possible. We’ve been trying to limit our work to school hours, so we can spend time focusing on the kids when they’re at home.

Unfortunately, that’s changed as of yesterday afternoon, when it was announced at the end of the day that all schools in Toronto would be pivoting to online learning as of this morning. We had planned to use these three precious days to finish up pre-boat launch list, which included waxing the hull, checking the keel bolts and greasing the prop.

With it looking increasingly likely that they will not go back to school after next week’s planned spring break, we’re suddenly looking at a slowdown of our work schedule. We figure at least through early May, one of us will be supervising virtual school while the other continues working away at the to-do list.

We’re planning to be living on the boat by mid-June, leaving us 10 weeks to finish purging and then pack up what we’re keeping. Some days it feels like loads of time and some days it feels like an overwhelming sprint to the finish.
