Why are we doing this? Honestly, my best response is why not? Obviously it’s an incredibly personal decision and your perspective will dictate how you view our decision. But most of this boils down to our kids. I never thought I’d enjoy being a parent as much as I do. It is, hands down, the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done. I’ve also learned just how quickly the time flies by. As each year passed by, and my love for the children deepened, I increasingly questioned why I would spend their best years chained to a desk. We’re fortunate enough to have some financial independence and lucky that we had kids later in life. So this allows the freedom to ask the following question: What’s more important than spending time with your kids? Our answer to that is “nothing.” With that question posed and answered every other decision became pretty easy. We already had the boat, desire, and knowledge. I don’t mean to gloss over the diligent planning, exhaustive (exhausting?!) conversations and fretting but, really, the decision was pretty easy. Being clear eyed in that made the details easier. So that’s why we’re doing it. We love to sail. We love spending time together. The idea of spending more time together and participating more fully in our children’s life sounds like a dream come true. Give me all the money in the world and our decision wouldn’t change. We’d do exactly what we’re setting out to do…though the boat would be different.
